Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom (PRWEB UK) 18 August 2011
Lord Northcliffe, the former owner of Amalgamated Press, was Sir Geoffrey’s uncle and in the auction to be held at Perkins, George Mawer & Co. there are some intriguing items including signed photographs and documents by Adolf Hitler, Napolean Bonaparte and Queen Anne.
Amongst the collectables to be sold at a Lincolnshire auction in September are an intriguing selection of signed items including a letter from Napoleon Bonaparte, an autographed photograph of Adolf Hitler, and a handwritten letter signed by Queen Anne. There is also a small leather bound volume bearing the signature of Napoleon Bonaparte. These items are amongst the effects of Sir Arthur Geoffrey Annesley Harmsworth, 3rd Baronet, who was born in 1904 and died unmarried in 1980, his baronetcy then becoming extinct. Familiarly known as Sir Geoffrey, he had many associations with the County of Lincolnshire and in particular the Town of Louth and the village of Tealby, and was a great supporter of Lincoln Cathedral and the artists thereof including Peter de Wint and his followers. One of Louth?s most famous residents was Alfred Tennyson (he was a pupil at Louth school in the early 1800s) and included in the auction (Lot 437) is a signed sepia photograph of the great poet. It also bears the inscription, ?I prefer the Dirty Monk to the others of me?, a reference to a comment made by his wife, Emily, comparing his beard to that of a lazy monk.
The letter from Napoleon Bonaparte, one of the greatest military leaders in history and Emperor of France, is handwritten and addressed to the Minister of the Interior (Lot 451). It is dated December 28th 1804, and comes with a separate English translation in a contemporary folder with gold lettering. Also included in the auction (Lot 450) is a small leather bound volume, ?Maxime et Pensees du Prisonnier de Sainte-Helene?: a manuscript bearing the autograph of Napoleon and a backstamp of his St Helene library, dated 1820. Another important historical document (Lot 452) is a letter from Queen Anne, Queen of England from 1702-1714, written in French on 14th November 1712. The photograph of Hitler (Lot 438) depicts the Dictator with Lord Rothermere and was signed by Hitler on the occasion of their meeting on the 7th January 1937. Other military items include (Lot 491) a rare ?Eagle? German WW1 linen helmet badge, as well as a selection of WW1 and WW2 medals, badges and assorted memorabilia (Lots 485/490). Of particular interest amongst Sir Geoffrey?s effects is a red leather box containing the original parchment certificate for Sir John Harmsworth?s baronetcy (Lot 449). It comes with the seal (damaged) of George V, and the original exterior carrying box bearing the label ?Asprey? of Bond Street, London. Further lots include a selection of watercolours, signed prints and engravings, including several with local interest, collections of items relating to artist Peter de Wint and an assortment of watercolours featuring Lincoln Cathedral.
The auction takes place on September 8th 2011 at the Corn Exchange
